The simplicity of the design seems to beckon many would-be dome home buyers into thinking that they too can become owner-builders. We began the process by looking for property. This, in itself, is no easy task since many communities do not allow “unusual homes” in their areas. This is not to say that the geodesics can’t conform to building codes. In fact the one we are building virtually exceeds all codes in our area. So before you get your hopes up make sure that the building of a dome home is allowed on the property on which you wish to build your dome. If there is an association of homeowners, then I would suggest that you get a written approval for the dome before you start investing in the dome materials and site preparation.

OK, Now I’m satisfied that the dome home will be allowed on the property purchased. What now?

Make sure that the property is of sufficient size. Remember that most residential homes incorporate a garage. Most single-dome homes don’t. In other words make sure that there is sufficient property to build a second
